The new version has just been approved and should be showing up in the Mac App Store soon.

It includes the following improvements:

- Alternating row colors on the List tab are now optional;
- A Nav menu item to go Home (top of list) has been added;
- An author title may now be included in a Quote-From citation;
- Added an Image-Class field that can be used to apply a class to an image identified in the Image Name field;
- Single quotes around values are now removed when reading a Note from disk, to increase compatibility with YAML processing conventions.

Oh, and you can find all the details in the [Knowledge Base](https://notenik.app/kb/version-19.4.0.html).

Would like to confirm that single-quoted YAML values function [as anticipated in the previous beta](https://discourse.notenik.app/t/notenik-19-3-6-available-for-beta-testing-on-july-26th-2026/887).

If anyone hasn’t already this is an opportunity to check out [zk](https://github.com/zk-org/zk), a “plain text note-taking assistant” and command line tool that is meant for [YAML frontmatter’d notes](https://zk-org.github.io/zk/notes/note-frontmatter.html) and is useful for:

- It’s [ad hoc querying capabilities](https://zk-org.github.io/zk/notes/note-filtering.html)
  - With [fzf integration](https://zk-org.github.io/zk/config/tool-fzf.html)

- [Templates](https://zk-org.github.io/zk/notes/template.html) for note-taking and for affecting how notes are formatted in the terminal
- Integrating with [LSP-compatible text editors](https://zk-org.github.io/zk/tips/editors-integration.html)
  - I’ve had success with [basic LSP functionalities in BBEdit](https://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/lsp-notes.html#config).

Overall I think it’s great for achieving some of Notenik’s common capabilities (i.e., linking and backlinking, searching) in external programs without having to rely on “heavier” applications like iA Writer, for example. The experience running Notenik in parallel with editors like neovim and BBEdit that are running zk’s LSP is unmatched in my opinion.

zk will return errors if your YAML frontmatter is incorrect. So the adjustment that this Notenik release provides is great for escaping special characters that might otherwise disrupt YAML value strings.
