Several - on Start Up

No matter what, Notenik opens to the Knowledge Base on start up. I have designated a different collection as essential, but it resets on start up.

Also, “Recent Collections” is always blank.

Is this checked?

Notenik settings > General

Also, ensure that you did not move the essential collection after creating it; otherwise, Notenik may not be able to locate it automatically

Thank you - yeah, the Notenik Tips at Startup is de-selected. And I haven’t moved a notebook elsewhere, through finder or otherwise. It’s always been user/Notenik/Collections

If I designate a collection as essential, it works during that session. But if I quit Notenik, I can’t call it back up again, at startup or otherwise. Thanks for taking the time and idea!

does cmd+opt+E bring the collection?

Yes, but only if I designate inside that Notenik session. So I’ll “make this collection essential” and if I go to another collection and press cmd opt E, it’ll call up that collection that I want. Once I quit Notenik and come back, the cmd opt E doesn’t do anything at that point. Thanks!

Try opening the Log window in Notenik after launch and see if there are any helpful error messages in there.

Notenik uses the standard Apple UserDefaults API to store the path to the Essential Collection, and Notenik stores that choice as soon as it is made… so I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be able to recall that setting when it is relaunched.

It also makes me wonder if you have some sort of special access rules somehow set for user/Notenik/Collections…?

Will do, Herb. I think it might be that I have something weird going on with my permissions or something. I will check the log and post anything helpful here. thanks for checking in!

So, nothing on the logs that jumped out to me. But I moved Notenik and some related files to the trash and re-downloaded it from the App Store, and that fixed the cmd opt E shortcut to open the essential note. So when I hit that keyboard shortcut, it opens up the expected notebook. But any time I quit Notenik, the default notebook/collection that opens up is the Knowledge Base. I also tried to toggle “Open tips at startup” and de-select it, to see if that worked, and nah - nothing.

But at least the Essential Collection is 1) marked correctly, and 2) I can call it up. For now, no sweat. I’ll just move the knowledge base off to the side, and hit cmd opt e to open the notebook I want! Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions! I do think this is a me problem, and not a Notenik thing, so I’ll keep searching.

When you say “nothing on the logs” it makes me wonder if you looked in the Notenik Log window, or whether you were looking someplace else. The Log window is available from beneath the Window menu. It’s the first place to look if things don’t seem to be behaving properly.

Gotcha! So in Notenik, went to “Window” and then “Log Window” and here’s what was in that.

I copied it to below, but replaced any personally identifiable info, so I replaced my username with “myusername”, a book name with “book name”, and there was a long alphanumeric string, and I bolded it below and called it “NumericTextStringEEXYZ1234” and I only replaced it because I didn’t know if that was like my computer ID or something - probably not! Hopefully this log is helpful? Anyways, from my view - not urgent at all, I can use Notenik just fine otherwise!

This line looks odd to me:

This makes it look like the Notenik app itself is being launched from some odd location that I don’t recognize.

Thanks, yeah - I’m not sure what that is, it seems like a cache or temp type folder. I actually travelled straight to it in Finder, and it’s blank. So I’ll delete/reinstall Notenik and reboot my computer to see if that helps. Anyways, it’s low stakes. I’ll get it to work at some point.

And when I look at the log now (all I did was quit and reopen) it’s a lot more ‘normal looking’ – but I’ll do some additional digging to see if I can share any resolution or observations.

Thanks for taking an interest, Herb!

Just to sum up, this is most likely some sort of permissions issue.

For the Essential Collection in particular, it’s nice to store this in the Notenik iCloud folder, since Notenik will always have permission to access this location.

That’s a good call - I’ll use iCloud for the essential notebook and just go from there. Thank you!
