Is there an option for preferentially displaying single item content lists?
I really like the ways in which streamlined and presentation modes provide a “Contents” list. It’s highly functional. When there is more than one note that is at a lower level the list of contents is automatically displayed. However, the list of contents is not displayed when there is only one note at a lower level. I can see that there is always a nicely formatted link to the next note in sequence at the foot of the page. I see the navigation link having a separate purpose.
This frequently trips me up. A lot of my work involves stepping into an array structure that has only one item at each level. After some time, a second or third item may appear at a level. Sometimes there will always be only one item. When I’m working with that sort of structure content list “is” the content.
I’d like to see the list of contents displayed even when there is only one note at a lower level. For me, this brings consistency: sub-items are displayed in a list of contents. At present there is some rule that says “single item lists do not merit display.” I’m not sure why that is.
I don’t know that I have a really good reason for that behavior. I guess it’s partly my English major faith in the rule that lists should have more than one item (and otherwise shouldn’t be lists), and partly my knowledge that a link to a single child would be redundant, since it would just be the next item anyway. But I can see your point, and don’t have any real aversion to implementing your request. If others have strong feelings one way or the other, they should probably weigh in.
